News from MMRC
We congratulate our director Ursula Hemetek on receiving an Honorary Membership by ICTM – International Council for Traditional Music
The Honorary Membership recognises the outstanding contributions by Ursula Hemetek to the work of ICTM.
"Ursula Hemetek has been a member of ICTM for several decades and has made outstanding contributions to the work of the Council. From 2005 until 2013 she was an ordinary member of the Council’s executive board. In 1999, Ursula Hemetek founded the ICTM Study Group on Music and Minorities. Together with her colleagues in the Study Group, Ursula Hemetek was a driving force in establishing ethnomusicological minority studies within the ICTM and the ethnomusicological community at large. Ursula Hemetek served as the Study Group’s chair until she became Secretary General of the Council in 2017. She served in this function until 2021, attaching particular importance to democracy and transparency in the Council’s governance structures. Her service as Secretary General is characterized by important innovations from member surveys to decolonizing initiatives." (Marko Kölbl, 2023)
Congratulations also go out to our research fellow María del Mar Ocaña Guzmán on receiving an Honourable Mention by The British Forum for Ethnomusicology (BFE) for her paper, “‘Jewels’ within the Sound Archive: Unfolding the Metaphor’s Materialities”, presented at the BFE Annual Conference at The University of Edinburgh in April 2023.
The prize panel, consisting of Heather Sparling, Elina Seye and Joe Browning, writes: “This theoretically sophisticated paper maps an extensive network of metaphors surrounding the collection, curation and evaluation of archival recordings, revealing how they are understood and valued by archivists, scholars, musicians and others. The author treats the archive as an ethnographic field of study and opens up new ways of understanding the archive, a key institution for musicians engaging with historical music traditions as well as for ethnomusicologists.”
We are happy to inform you about new developments at the MMRC, as well as about interesting events and new publications of other institutions and authors that are related to our work.
